A Timeline of the events
1839 - South Yemen comes under British rule, and when the Suez Canal opens in 1869 serves as a major refuelling port.
1849- As part of their old empire, the Ottomans regain control of North Yemen after losing in in the 1600s 1918- Turkish Empire crumbles. North Yemen gains independence and is ruled by the Imam Yahya. 1967 - South Yemen breaks away from England. Formation of People's Republic of Yemen, comprising Aden and former Protectorate of South Arabia. 1969 - Communist take power in south, rename state People's Democratic Republic of Yemen and reorient economy, society and foreign policy towards Soviet bloc. Later causing many to flee to the North 1972- Border clashes between both Yemens. Cease fire agreed upon 1979 - Fresh fighting between two Yemens. Renewed efforts to unite the two states. 1986- Thousands die in political rivalry. The president from South flees. New government formed 1990- Both Yemens unite as the Republic of Yemen. Mr. Saleh is Made President. There still is a tension between former states. 1993- Vice-President Ali Salim al-Baid goes to south saying that the southerners are being attacked by the Northerners. 1994- Al-Baid declares independence from the Republic of Yemen 2000- Al-Qaeda attacks Yemen. In time, other Shia sects fight in Yemen (Al-Houthi) 2004- Al- Houthi leads an insurgency in the North. Hundreds die to battle them. 2008- Demonstrators in Sanaa demand electoral reform and fresh polls 2011- President Saleh agrees to hand over the power to his deputy, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Government unifies by including a prime minister from the opposition. 2012- Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi inaugurated as president after uncontested elections. 2013- National dialogue conference starts, trying to create a new constitution. 2014- At the National Dialogue conference, a draft of the Constitution is agreed upon. 2014- Houthi Rebels take capital: Sanaa. Also they reject the draft of the constitution proposed. President Hadi and government resign in protest of the takeover of the Capital. 2015- Houthi rebels say that they will take control and a transitional five- member presidential council will replace President Hadi. 2015- Mosque Bombed in Aden by Houthis (BBC News) |
